Why Job Applications Make You Re-Enter Resume Information

I know you don’t want to hear this but: don’t skip the process of re-entering your information into the online application!

There’s a reason that companies make you do this second step…

Today’s Applicant Tracking Systems (or ATS for short) are designed to collect, scan, and review your resume. This technology searches through your document for keywords to determine if you’re a good match for the role.

Companies that make you re-enter the information after uploading your resume aren’t doing it to annoy you or to make the process more tedious than it has to be.

Here are the actual reasons:

Reason 1: Companies want to store your information into their database and save your profile.

Reason 2: Companies want to gather the information from your resume just in case the software doesn’t properly read the document that you uploaded.

Hopefully, as technology advances, the ATS will be able to effectively read the information in your resume document (regardless of the format) and companies won’t require this second step.

Until then, take the time to complete ALL the steps required when applying for a job.
